Hiring a magician may seem like the easy solution to entertaining your guests at your virtual event, but it’s not always as straightforward. You should be aware of a few important things before hiring one so that you get the best experience possible and don’t end up spending more than you were expecting.

Unless you’re sure about the performer’s experience, you’re taking a gamble on your event. Hire someone who has experience performing in both worlds — the real world and especially the virtual world. That way, the entertainer can seamlessly transfer over to the virtual world and make your event beyond memorable.

That’s why we’ve compiled this list of what to know first when looking for a virtual magician.

Be sure to check out any videos of the virtual magician.

You don’t want any (bad) surprises on the day of your event. So when hiring virtual magician it’s a good idea to check out any videos of the virtual magician to see how the performer handles an audience.

Are the attendees having a good time? Watching a few videos of the presenter’s experience putting on a virtual show will also give you a sense of the show’s quality and whether the entertainer is a good fit for your group.

Warning signs:

  • The magician has no video evidence of experience performing for audiences.

  • The magician has “audience free” videos of his performances. Just the camera, the magician, and a table. Not a great sign.

  • The magician has footage of performances but no footage of virtual event performances. Beware! The entertainer may be great in person, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to the virtual arena.

Look at testimonials from past clients.

What have previous clients said about their experience of the virtual show? Not just friends or family, but real clients. And not just a few reviews. The more clients rave about the virtual magician after the show, the more certain you can be that your group will have a great time.

Here’s a real example of a testimonial of a virtual magic show:

Truly one the best experiences and a fantastic way to kickoff 2021! I would suggest booking Jon for a virtual magic show with friends, colleagues or family. My team had such a great time, I’m still in awe.
Easily the best day of my life!

Gabriella McDaniels, Nickelodeon

You can tell that the audience had the time of their lives. The virtual magician was able to engage the audience throughout the whole show, and they were all laughing. You can read more than a hundred reviews of Jon Finch’s zoom show.

Make sure the magician has all the necessary equipment for the job.

During your important virtual event, the last thing you want is the entertainer having a power outage or internet outage in his area. A good virtual magician has prepared for the unexpected outages—they can happen to the best of us.

Here are a few indications that the virtual magician isn’t just amazing—isn’t just fun—but is also prepared for worst-case-scenarios:

  • The magician has a backup internet, “a hotspot.”

  • He has a backup power supply

  • He has a backup laptop

These three features will ensure the show will go on and that the entertainer can keep your event going even if there’s a technical hiccup in his area, even if he loses electricity, internet, or access to his laptop.

Ask how many virtual shows he’s performed.

Some magicians advertise that they can perform at your virtual event. But how much experience do they have? If he’s performed 100 in-person shows, but only five virtual shows, then he’s not a seasoned virtual entertainer. More experience means that the entertainer has seen it all and is ready for anything and everything. He has a ready response no matter what your audience might throw at him.

Is the price premium? Or peanuts?

When it comes to event planning, there are many places where you can save on the cost – but entertainment is not one of them. You can book a virtual magician at bargain-basement prices — as little as $500. But your guests, years from now, will remember the entertainment more than anything else about that night. And if all they have are memories, then make sure those good ones involve an entertainer who isn’t just okay with average.

We’ve compiled this list of what to know first when looking for a virtual magician. Though hiring a virtual magician may seem like the easy solution, there are many things you should be aware of to get the best experience possible.
