Misconceptions about what it means to be a magician
It’s 2022 and we’re all barraged with information in the form of books, tutorials, and videos. I’ve been a professional magician for about 20 years now, and I’m gonna tell you what I wish I knew when I was starting out as an aspiring magician.
There are several myths about what it means to be a
magician
. Let’s get those out of the way.

Myths about being a magician

Myth 1: chicks dig a magician
Contrary to popular opinion (among guys at least), most attractive girls don’t wake up from a dream of a cool guy whoshowed her an amazing card trick. She doesn’t hope that an edgy street magician will one day sweep her off her feet, nor does she fantasize about magicians. “But what about Criss Angel? What about David Blaine?” True, girls dig Criss Angel and
David Blaine
(and David Copperfield in his era).
But that’s because they are attractive celebrities—not because they are
magicians
. There are better

magicians

than David Blaine and certainly better

magicians

than Criss Angel.

Consider David Copperfield or Michael Ammar or Lennart Green..

These magicians have more talent in their little fingers than Criss Angel has in his entire chiseled body. But you don’t see a host of hot girls screaming Ammar’s or Lennart’s name. It’s physical attractiveness and celebrity—not amazing magic. Lennart has neither attractiveness (not only physical attractiveness but his manner—he’snot “cool,” same with Ammar) nor celebrity (outside the magic fraternity). They are more corny than edgy. On multiple occasions I’ve performed for a guy or a couple guys, and the remarks were, “Oh my god, dude, that is a panty-dropper,” or simply, “You must get so much p***y.” Even Jay Leno, when seeing a card trick from a magician on his show, said words to that effect, “You must clean up in the bars.”

Girls love magic. They don’t love magicians

(unless you’re a hot magician with good game…and celebrity helps). A magic trick amazes or amuses, but does not arouse or intrigue a girl. At best it can charm her if you handle it right. But you know as well as I that the same trick can be charming in one man’s hands and off-putting in another’s hands.

Myth 2: if you can do David Blaine’s tricks, you can be successful like David Blaine

By the year 2000, I could do all of David Blaine’s tricks. Indeed, they got outstanding reactions. But if you can master all of Blaine’s tricks, and all of Criss Angel’s tricks (well, not his

tricks, he’s got a team of a dozen magicians coming up with the innovative ideas), that

still

makes you a second-rate David Blaine or a second-rate Criss Angel. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great for breaking the ice in high-school, but they won’t make you a national celebrity or even a celebrity in your own city. Neither David Blaine nor Criss Angel got famous because of their magic tricks—name almost any trick either have done and it had been done decades earlier by previous magicians. It was the presentation, the style, the persona and the showmanship or lack of showmanship (yes, David Blaine had no showmanship and Criss Angel has poor showmanship…and that

brand

made them

stand out

among the sea of magicians), and a huge budget and network supporting them and blasting them across the nation. Once you’ve mastered the t

An art piece could be hung in a child’s room. I’ve done events targeted to young moms. I did a tech trade show at the tech show in Chicago, USA. It was a big event and I sold a lot of products to people,  including pregnant moms. I saw a lot of big bellies that weekend. It was great because of such a targeted crowd. That’s one of my biggest buyers—young moms, young women, or women in general, doesn’t matter their age. This whole event was mostly women. There was a bunch of dads walking around too, carrying all the bags for the pregnant moms. But the ones that were shopping at the trade show were women. I’ve done what’s called the national trade show. That’s an Indianapolis event. It was a big success for me because I know my customer is usually women, 90% women, and a lot of times they’re in their mid-to-late twenties up to about 40. And they’re buying art prints and cards. A lot of times they are buying art prints not only for their own space, so for their bedroom, their dressing room, or their bathrooms, kitchens, and so forth. They’re buying; they want their modern style to be related to their children’s room; consequently, they’ll do modern prints for the kids’ rooms. They’ll come to me for sets and things for the kids’ rooms. So I know that. I know that’s my customer, so again, it’s dependent on where your customer is. Now, if you haven’t already, make sure you know who your customer is, so write it down somewhere. Make it clear. I have a photo I printed out of my ideal customer. I even gave her a fake name. You write down the attributes of your customer. So, for example, mine is, I imagined she’s probably in her late twenties, she’s artistic, she likes fashion blogs, she likes to go to cool events and trade shows and to find unique products. She’s that kind of girl. She’s a crafter herself. She’s artistic, and so she can appreciate those types of things. Even in her children’s room, she likes to explore that. Have that art up in her children’s room. I wrote down this person would probably be in her late 20s, I wrote down 29, and I gave her a name. This is a marketing strategy I’ve learned from several of the top marketers of our time. The reason why you do this is? There are real people out there to whom you’re reaching out. I find sometimes when we have internet companies, say we sell online, like e-commerce websites. Like on Etsy or Amazon or wherever. It’s almost like these people become pretend to us. They’re money coming in the bank. That’s not what you want to do. You never want to lose sight of the fact that you’re selling to real people. It sounds strange, but it’s true. You can start to see names and emails and price amounts when you start to do selling online. That’s where the disconnect comes. So always put yourself back into the shoes of your buyer. Who are they and where are they hanging out, not only online but at live events. Obviously online, you talk about where they would hang out on social media and so forth. But in this article, my main focus is what trade shows they would be at. Where would they go with their own family? Let’s say you are an artist and you are setting up at an event that caters to pets. Somebody might say, wow, that’s weird to have an artist at a pet show. Not at all. Why? Because pet portraiture now is a huge trend. It’s not going away anytime soon; because people want to have a photo of their dog rendered in watercolor, or in pen and ink, or in some cartoon illustration. That’s a big thing now. I find it that’s a cool trend now. They want to have a beautiful portrait done of their dog because our pets are like our family. Those of you for pet lovers, you would probably agree. Dog lovers, cat lovers, you would love to have a picture of your cat fluffy up on your wall because she’s part of the family. That’sthat’s the psychology behind that. Suppose you do that, you might want to look into a pet show. It sounds so funny, but guess what, that’s where the pet owners are hanging out. If you’re doing art for young moms like myself, you may want to check out baby shows, women shows, stuff like that. You May even want to check out like home decor shows, like modern home decor shows. Another trade show I did well at was called the One of A Kind show in Chicago. And I know that buyer is looking for unique things. Just the name of the store, people aren’t people coming to that trade show are looking for holiday gifts that aren’t going to be found in a department store. They’re not going to be found anywhere else. I encourage you always to research where your audience is going to be hanging out. Find out what trade shows they’re going to be at, and then try and apply to those shows. In this next article, you’ll learn about the application process for most trade shows and how to apply and to get the ball rolling in the following steps. Every single event is going to be a bit different, but the way that you apply to these events is as follows. You go to their website. One of the shows I love doing at the Indiana Convention Center is called Manufacturer and Distributor Innovation Conference. You can go on eventbrite.com and check it out if you want. They do a variety of different cities as well, but this is an event I love to go to, and when I applied to it, I go to their website; and a lot of times it’ll say on the site when is the application window of time.
