The Indianapolis Museum of Art is a huge art museum located on the historic Newfields campus, which contains Lilly House, the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres, the Gardens at Newfields, the Beer Garden, and other attractions.

Newfields is located three miles north of downtown Indianapolis, northwest of Crown Hill Cemetery, at the junction of North Michigan Road and West 38th Street.

The museum’s collection comprises over 54,000 objects made up of:

  • American art, from the Colonial period to the present

  • Asian art, from China, Japan, India, southeast Asia

  • European art, from the medieval period to the present

  • African art

  • Contemporary art

  • New Media art

There are exhibits, courses, tours, and events that alternate with the seasons.

The entire campus was previously referred to as the Indianapolis Museum of Art, but in 2017 the campus and organization were renamed “Newfields” to better reflect the breadth of offerings and venues.

The term “Indianapolis Museum of Art” now refers to the main art museum edifice, which serves as the campus’ centerpiece and legal name, as well as the business entity doing business as Newfields. The Indianapolis Museum of Art is the ninth oldest and eighth largest encyclopedic art museum in America. The permanent collection includes over 54,000 pieces, including African, American, Asian, and European works. Newfields is open 362 days a year and averages about 650,000 visitors annually.

Newfields offers something for everyone, with rotating exhibits, events, courses, and tours for all ages. In 2017 the IMA campus and organization were renamed “Newfields” to better reflect the breadth of offerings and venues. The main art museum edifice (naming rights currently held by Lilly Endowment, Inc.) is now referred to as the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA), and Newfields refers to the campus as a whole.

IMA Art Services

IMA Art Services is a consulting firm that specializes in public art and is based on Newfields Lab, the museum’s other consulting arm. IMA Art Services established its first contract with the Indianapolis Airport Authority in January 2011. The museum oversaw the Indianapolis Airport Authority’s art collection, which included 40 pieces on display in the passenger terminal of the Indianapolis International Airport, for one year with the $100,000 one-year contract.

Newfields is a great place to take a day off (a rare treat for most Newfields magicians) . If you get a chance, give yourself a great memory at Newfields.
