Wedding terms

A wedding is a ceremony in which two people are united in marriage. Weddings encompass a vast array of traditions, customs, and rituals that differ across cultures, religions, social classes, and personal preferences. Weddings typically involve the exchange of vows, presentation of symbolic gifts such as rings, and a public declaration of marriage by an officiant or celebrant, followed by a celebratory reception.

Weddings may be religious, civil, or a blend of both, with formats ranging from elaborate multi-day events to simple courthouse ceremonies. Common elements include processions, readings, prayers, music, and the wearing of special garments like the white wedding dress, a tradition popularized in the West by Queen Victoria. Rituals such as the breaking of a glass in Jewish weddings, the garland exchange in Hindu weddings, or the handfasting in Celtic traditions illustrate the diversity of wedding customs worldwide.

The structure of a wedding ceremony often follows a set order: processional, officiant’s remarks, readings, vow and ring exchange, pronouncement of marriage, and recessional. Celebrations may include speeches, dances, and the cutting of a wedding cake. Modern adaptations include microweddings, elopements, and mass weddings, reflecting changing social norms and practical considerations such as cost and public health.
