A ring bearer is a participant in a wedding ceremony, traditionally a young boy, whose chief responsibility is to carry the wedding rings up to the altar. The role has its roots in Victorian England and has since evolved into an important symbol in many Western weddings, adding charm and signifying innocence. A small pillow or cushion often aids the ring bearer in accomplishing his task, with rings affixed securely to prevent mishaps. While this role is customarily fulfilled by children, adults or pets can also be ring bearers depending on cultural practices and personal preferences of the couple. Notwithstanding age or species, the purpose remains: to deliver the symbolic objects of marital commitment safely to those about to make their vows.
