Two shows last weekend were satisfying for different reasons. Both were fun in their own way. I always feel honored when groups I perform for enjoyed the magic so much that they invite me back year after year.
I was hired to perform last Friday for the volleyball team which had hired me last year. It was challenging, and in a good way. The girls were engaged and desperately tried to “catch me.” Some even sat on the floor trying to view my hands from underneath.
Such an eager crowd keeps a performer sharp, and that’s why I love it.
On Saturday, I was two hours early for a show in Naperville IL (a city near Chicago)—a 30 year old birthday party. I had arrived long before any party-goers had arrived.
Obviously, being late is a great inconvenience to the party host. Arriving too early can also be an inconvenience, so it’s better to be early, but of course not march in the moment you arrive. Just give yourself wiggle room in case of the sometimes-inevitable hiccups along the way. This way you give both yourself and the host peace of mind.
Funny thing at the birthday party…
The up close magic shifted into a parlor show. Everyone sat while I performed, bringing one or two people up with me for each effect.
Once done, they began chanting “encore, encore!”
So I did an encore.
Then the chanting continued, and it settled into, “Joncore! Joncore!”
This was the first time I had heard that particular chant from an audience.
So I did another. And another.
